Jake Measom, MD, knew he wanted to become a doctor in high school after having the experience of working with several local physicians and seeing the positive impact had on the community. Ever since he entered medical school he has been fascinated by controlling and managing pain. The unique interplay of the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects suited him. Pain can be so pervasive and have such large impact on people's quality of life and he saw the joy of those who are able to obtain relief.
“I absolutely love the field of pain medicine. My favorite thing in the world is helping people get back to what they live doing and living their lives. Whether people on a get back out skiing, golfing, gardening or just spending time with family being able to help people reclaim these joys in life is why I enjoy treating pain,” he says.
Dr. Measom feels that working in pain management allows him to help patients improve their quality of life by reducing pain through a whole person approach. He is very interested in functionality and what pain relief allows one to do more so than just improving pain score number. He is always trying to be on the cutting edge of available technology procedures to treat pain and develop individualized plans to maximize results.
In addition to standard pain treatment injections, Dr. Measom specializes in a number of advanced pain treatment areas including neuromodulation, which is the application of electrical stimulus to nerves to alter how pain is perceived by the brain. The specialized types of stimulation include spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation as well as peripheral nerve stimulation. In addition to neuromodulation, he also specializes in multiple forms of vertebral augmentation procedures to treat compression fractures and burst fractures of the spine.
“I try to use the most advanced technology available using minimally invasive techniques to treat multiple pain conditions that previously required large and open surgeries," he says. "I am dedicated to keeping up to speed on new technology as it comes available and finding ways to appropriately apply that technology to treat patients.”
Seen patients be able to return to activities that they love that pain was keeping them from is what gets him up in the morning. If we can improve quality of life and restore function, he considers that a success.
“My goal with every single patient is to provide the highest quality care that I would want my own mother or father to receive," he continues. "Treat every patient like mom or dad and you cannot go wrong.”
When looking for a pain management physician I think a patient should look for someone who is interested in restoring function and looking to provide safe, quality treatments with the goal of improving quality of life.
The most common issues that he treats are certainly back and neck pain. These issues are so common there certainly what constitutes the majority of what we see. In addition to standard back and neck he also sees a significant amount of orthopedic type pain such as knees, hips, shoulders, etc. this includes treating chronic postoperative pain as well as general pain in these areas that keep people from doing the activities he enjoys. Dr. Measom also enjoy treating neuropathies and CRPS and enjoys bringing new technologies to patients and helping them treat these conditions.
“I feel be most important to educate patients regarding what treatments are available for back pain and other common conditions,' he says. "I think it is important for patients to know that pain management is not a last resort, and we enjoy treating pain early on to help restore function before pain progresses further. I think it is also important to educate patient's that going to pain management does not mean treatment with opioids. We strive to provide safe and quality treatments and hope to minimize, discontinue or avoid opioids if possible.”
